The YouTube thumbnail advice you have read is out of date

Almost every guide online still says a YouTube thumbnail should be 1280 by 720 with a hard 2 MB limit. Both halves of that have moved.

YouTube's own documentation now recommends 3840 by 2160 at 16:9, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. And the file size ceiling depends on where you upload from:2 MB from mobile, but 50 MB from desktop. If you have been fighting the 2 MB limit, you were uploading from your phone — the same thumbnail goes up untouched from a computer.

1280 by 720 still works and is still accepted. It is simply no longer what YouTube asks for, and on a large modern display the difference is visible. Both sizes are in the preset list so you can pick deliberately.

Why one image for everything does not work

Each placement crops to its own aspect ratio. Upload a square to something expecting 16:9 and the platform decides what to remove — and its automatic crop has no idea which part of your image matters. That is how you end up with a listing photo missing the product, or a thumbnail with the top of somebody's head cut off.

Generating each size deliberately means you choose the framing. The tool centres its crop automatically, which is right most of the time, but check the previews. When the automatic framing gets it wrong on an important image, use the crop tool to frame that one by hand.

Start from the largest original you have

Every output is derived from your source, so the source sets the ceiling. Scaling down looks excellent; scaling up cannot invent detail and always looks soft.

The largest common target here is 2048 pixels for Shopify products, followed by 2000 for Etsy listings and 3840 for a YouTube thumbnail. If your source is smaller than the sizes you have selected, the tool tells you which ones will be enlarged rather than quietly producing something soft.

Where a platform publishes a hard upload limit — YouTube's 2 MB mobile cap being the notable one — the tool searches for the highest quality that fits underneath it rather than handing you a file that will be rejected.

How to resize Images for Social Media and Marketplaces

  1. Drop your source image onto the box above. The bigger the original, the better every output will be.
  2. Tick the platforms and placements you need. Selecting several is the point of the tool.
  3. Check each preview and nudge the crop where the automatic framing has cut something important.
  4. Download everything as a ZIP with sensible file names.

Limits worth knowing

Every tool has boundaries. These are this one's, stated plainly so you do not waste time discovering them yourself.

  • Platforms change their recommended sizes without much warning. The sizes here are checked periodically, but always confirm anything critical against the platform own documentation.
  • Automatic cropping centres the frame. It has no idea where the subject of your photo is, so check the previews before downloading.
  • A source image smaller than a target size will have to be enlarged, and will look soft. Start from the largest original you have.

Frequently asked questions

What size should an Instagram post be?
1080 x 1080 for a square, 1080 x 1350 for a portrait post, which occupies the most space in the feed, and 1080 x 1920 for Stories and Reels. Instagram compresses whatever you upload, so send a clean 1080 pixel wide file rather than something enormous.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube now recommends 3840 x 2160 at 16:9, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. Most guides still say 1280 x 720, which is the old advice — it still works, but it is no longer what YouTube asks for. The file size cap depends on where you upload from: 2 MB from mobile, 50 MB from desktop. If you are hitting the 2 MB wall, you are uploading from your phone.
What size should Etsy listing photos be?
Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels on the shortest side, and a square 2000 x 2000 is the safest choice because it is what the listing grid expects. Larger is fine; Etsy resizes it.
What does Amazon require for product images?
The main image needs to be at least 1000 pixels on the longest side to enable zoom, and 1600 pixels or more is recommended. It must be on a pure white background, with the product filling around 85 percent of the frame, and no watermarks, logos or added text.
Why not just upload one big image everywhere?
Because each platform crops to its own aspect ratio. Upload a square to a placement expecting 16:9 and the platform decides what to cut, which is frequently somebody head. Sizing deliberately means you choose the framing.
